The MICAH Youth Council hosted a press conference at Central High School to highlight the urgent need for action on gun violence and awareness surrounding the three gun safety referendums. With local media outlets like WREG, Memphis Noticias, ABC24, and Action News 5 present, students delivered powerful messages, joined by City Councilman J.B. Smiley in support of the cause. The primary call to action was to invite students to participate in mock elections so we could learn how youth would vote on the gun safety referendums.
On Sunday evening, the MICAH Youth Council hosted a rally and shared the results of the mock elections.
We got 710 responses, from 5th graders to 12th graders all over Memphis!
For Question 1 which, as a review, would ban carrying a handgun in Memphis without a permit: We got almost 84% FOR the amendment!
For Question 2 which would ban the sale and carrying assault rifles in Memphis (open or closed carry): We got 79% FOR the amendment:)
And finally for Question 3 which is the Red Flag Law--meaning courts can seize guns from those deemed to be a significant risk to themselves or others: we got 83.5% FOR the amendment!
