The Tennessee Legislative Session has officially come to a close. While we celebrated a few key victories, there are still important developments to monitor.
MICAH leaders, in collaboration with TIRRC, TN4ALL, and our Tirzah partners, worked hard to oppose two particularly concerning bills: the State Takeover Bill (HB0662) and the Plyler Challenge Bill (HB0792). Although both bills passed through the House and Senate, they met significant resistance from community leaders across the state. As a result, both pieces of legislation are currently on hold and will require additional committee votes to advance further. These votes could take place in a special session or be postponed until the 2026 legislative session.
We will remain vigilant in the event a special session is called this year. It's important to recognize that it was our collective efforts—making calls, sending letters, and testifying at the Capitol—that helped slow these bills down and push them into a state of suspension.
