MSCS Immigration Resolution

Updated: Jun 5

On May 27, the Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) Board of Education approved a resolution reaffirming its commitment to protecting the district’s most vulnerable students, regardless of their immigration status.

The resolution states that MSCS has a responsibility to ensure all students who reside within its boundaries, regardless of immigration status, can safely access a free public K-12 education. Our Co-chair Sandra Pita, along with several parents, attended the committee meeting to voice their support for the resolution, emphasizing the importance of accessible education for all students. Sandra spoke passionately in favor of the resolution, highlighting the need for inclusivity and protection for immigrant students.

This resolution comes at a time when federal and state immigration policies are becoming increasingly strict. Even so, MSCS has made it clear that its schools will continue to be safe and accessible spaces for all students.

We commend the MSCS Board for taking this important step and remain committed to supporting policies that protect and uplift immigrant communities.

Thank you to everyone who has been engaged and continues to advocate for immigrant justice in our schools!
