Why should we care?
SCS’s ability to provide a quality, equitable education is being undercut by high teacher turnover and year-long teaching vacancies, as well as significant maintenance deficiencies within the schools, all of which leads to higher financial, educational, and health costs. A lack of access to wraparound services provided by qualified social workers, psychologists, and nurses inhibits the successful treatment of trauma or Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE). Abuse, neglect, and trauma significantly increase the likelihood of suspensions, juvenile criminal behavior, and incarceration. With a median age four years below the national average, Memphis’s population can support economic development, but only if we provide children in our community access to opportunities and support.
Equipping people of faith and goodwill to organize communities for systemic change through collective action.

About the event
Effective leadership is imperative if transformation is to take place in your organization, community, or congregation. The emphasis throughout this training will be on engagement with the participants along with some learning by doing, including hands-on skill practice sessions and feedback from peers and trainers.
This immersive program will give students the opportunity to look at social issues in their own communities through the lens of organizing and build the skills to make an impact on those issues–both in the future as adults and today as young people. Throughout the week, you will delve deeper into the topics of power, self-interest, one-on-ones, public vs private, power analysis, issues and actions, effective meetings, teams and propositions. The week will also include a field trip to Civic Center Plaza, to tour Memphis City Hall and the Vasco A. Smith Jr. County Administration Building.
